Lycomedes of Scyros

Lycomedes of Scyros was King of Skyros at the time of the Trojan War.

Biography[]

Lycomedes was King of the Dolopians of Skyros and the father of Deidameia, and he was said to have pushed an exiled Theseus from a cliffside to prevent the popular hero from usurping his throne. In 1203 BC, at the request of Thetis, he sheltered Achilles on his island and disguised him as one of his daughters to prevent him from being taken by King Agamemnon to serve in the Trojan War, and Achilles seduced Deidameia and fathered a son, Neoptolemus. Achilles was later discovered after Odysseus simulated an attack on the island, causing Achilles to draw his sword and reveal that he was no woman.
