Lusitania was a Roman province which existed from 27 BC to 410 AD, with Emerita Augusta (Merida) serving as its capital. It was named for the Lusitani people, and it was established after their subjugation by the Roman Republic. In 410 AD, it was conquered by the Suebi, and the name Lusitania is now used as an alternative name for Portugal.
