Lunalilo

Lunalilo (31 January 1835-3 February 1874) was King of the Hawaiian Kingdom from 8 January 1873 to 3 February 1874, succeeding Kamehameha V and preceding Kalakaua.

Biography[]

William Charles Lunalilo was born in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaiian Kingdom in 1835. The son of Charles Kana'ina and Kehauluohi, he was a grandnephew of Kamehameha I and a cousin of Kamehameha V. Nicknamed "Prince Bill," he composed Hawaii's first national anthem, served on the Privy Council from 1863 to 1865 and in the House of Nobles from 1863 to 1872, and was elected king by the legislature in 1872 due to his support for democracy. He was loved by the Hawaiian people, and he moved to restore the bicameral legislature, including the popularly-elected House of Representatives. He suppressed a mutiny before dying of tuberculosis in 1874.
