Biography[]
Luis Miguel Sanchez Cerro was born in Piura, Peru in 1889, and he came from a family of mestizo and Malagasy descent. He lost three fingers while fighting during the overthrow of President Guillermo Billinghurst in 1934, and he was again shot in 1921 during a failed coup against Augusto B. Leguia. While in exile, he served in the Spanish Foreign Legion and was wounded during the Rif War. He later served in the Royal Italian Army before taking part in the 1930 coup against Leguia and heading a military junta from 1930 to 1931. He was elected President later that same year, leading the fascist Revolutionary Union. He faced several revolts for his repression of APRA, and he supported a Peruvian filibuster attack on the Colombian town of Leticia, leading to the Leticia War of 1932. On 30 April 1933, after reviewing 20,000 young recruits for the war with Colombia at a Lima racetrack, he was shot through the heart by APRA member Abelardo de Mendoza.
