Luis María Argaña (3 October 1932-23 March 1999) was Vice President of Paraguay from 15 August 1998 to 23 March 1999, succeeding Angel Seifart and preceding Julio Cesar Franco.
Biography[]
Luis María Argaña was born in Asuncion, Paraguay in 1932, and he worked as a university professor before serving in the Chamber of Deputies, as President of the Supreme Court from 1983 to 1988, as Foreign Minister from 1989 to 1990, and as a leader of the Colorado Party of Paraguay's democratic wing. During the democratic era, however, Argaña supported reconciliation with Alfredo Stroessner's wing of the party and, while running for President in 1993, vowed to let Stroessner return from exile. He lost the party primary due to electoral fraud, but he was elected Vice President in 1998. His rival Lino Oviedo and President Raul Cubas Grau had Argaña assassinated by an armed group in Asuncion in March 1999; his vehicle was ambushed and sprayed with bullets, and Argaña's assassination triggered the Marzo Paraguayo revolution and Cubas' resignation.
