Luis Manuel Fernandez de Portocarrero

Luis Manuel Fernandez de Portocarrero (8 January 1635-14 September 1709) was a Cardinal of the Papal States and Spain's Viceroy of Sicily from 1677 to 1678, succeeding Francisco de Gattinara and preceding Vicente de Gonzaga y Doria.

Biography[]

Fernandez was born in Palma del Rio in the Province of Cordoba in southern Spain in 1635, and in 1669 he became a Cardinal. In 1677 he was appointed as Archbishop of Toledo in addition to Viceroy of Sicily, but served as an interim governor until Vicente de Gonzaga y Doria succeeded him. He became a supporter of the French Party in Madrid as King Carlos II of Spain slowly fell from life, but in 1706 he changed his support to the Austrian party and later rejoined the Bourbon party during the War of the Spanish Succession. Unwilling to gain the Papal States' ire, King Felipe V of Spain did not banish him and instead accepted him. He died in 1709.
