Luis Jose de Orbegoso

Luis Jose de Orbegoso (25 August 1795-5 February 1847) was President of Peru from 21 December 1833 to 23 February 1835 (succeeding Agustin Gamarra and preceding Felipe Santiago Salaverry) and of North Peru from 21 August 1837 to 30 July 1838 (preceding Jose de la Riva Aguero).

Biography[]

Luis Jose de Orbegoso was born in Chuquizongo, Peru in 1795, and he came from a family of Spanish nobility. He served under José de San Martín during the Peruvian War of Independence and under Jose de la Mar during the war with Gran Colombia, and he was elected President in 1833, defeating Agustin Gamarra's preferred successor Pedro Pablo Bermudez. In 1835, the young Felipe Santiago Salaverry overthrew Orbegoso, who - with backing from South Peru and Bolivian president Andres de Santa Cruz - regained power and executed Salaverry. Santa Cruz eclipsed Orbegoso in power and formed the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy, while Orbegoso was limited to being President of North Peru. He later failed to seize power from Santa Cruz with Chilean backing, and he died in Trujillo in 1847.
