Luis Carrera

Luis Florentino Juan Manuel Silvestre de los Dolores de la Carrera y Verdugo (1791-8 April 1818) was a Basque-Chilean general during the Chilean War of Independence. Carrera was a fierce rival of Bernardo O'Higgins, and he was executed for treason in 1818.

Biography[]

Luis Carrera was born in Santiago, Chile in 1791 to a family of Basque origin. Carrera completed his studies at the best school in the Captaincy-General of Chile but in 1813 fought for the poor rebels at the Battle of Yerbas Buenas during the South American Wars of Liberation. Carrera later fought rival rebel general Bernardo O'Higgins and drove him into Argentina, taking over the Chilean resistance struggle. In November 1814, he shot another rival general, Juan MacKenna, in a duel, and he was executed in 1818 for multiple acts of treason against Chile. He was executed alongside his brother Juan Jose Carrera.
