Luis Arce

Luis Arce (28 September 1963-) was President of Bolivia from 8 November 2020, succeeding Jeanine Anez.

Biography[]

Luis Arce was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1963, and he worked as an economist for the Central Bank of Bolivia before serving as Evo Morales' Finance Minister from 2006 to 2017 and in 2019. He oversaw the nationalization of Bolivia's hydrocarbons industry, the rapid expansion of GDP, and the reduction of poverty, briefly resigning in 2017 for kidney cancer treatment before returning in 2019. After the 2019 Bolivian coup d'etat, Arce went into exile in Mexico and Argentina, and, running as a moderate socialist, he was elected president in 2020. He realigned Bolivia back towards the left, combating the COVID-19 pandemic despite Bolivia having a large vaccine hesitant population. In June 2024, he after a split with Evo Morales led to a faction of MAS-IPSP disowning Arce, Arce had General Juan Jose Zuniga stage a coup to bolster popular support for his government.
