Luis Altamirano

Luis Altamirano Talavera (5 July 1867-25 July 1938) was President of Chile from 11 September 1924 to 23 January 1925, succeeding Arturo Alessandri and preceding Pedro Dartnell.

Biography[]

Luis Altamirano Talavera was born in Concepcion, Chile on 5 July 1867, and he served in the congressional army during the Chilean Civil War of 1891 and became a colonel in 1908 and a divisional general in 1919. In 1924, President Arturo Alessandri appointed Altamirano to head a new cabinet after military officers Carlos Ibanez del Campo and Marmaduque Grove demanded a cabinet shake-up, and Alessandri eventually resigned rather than become a pawn of the military. Altamirano headed a military junta until January 1925, when he was deposed in another military coup. He died in 1938.
