Biography[]
Luis Adolfo Siles was born in La Paz, Bolivia in 1925, the son of Hernando Siles and the brother of Hernan Siles. He practiced law before joining the Christian Democratic Party of Bolivia and supporting Rene Barrientos' regime. He served as Barrientos' Vice President from 1966 until the President's death in a 1969 helicopter crash, upon which he became President. The general Alfredo Ovando Candia overthrew Siles in a coup in September 1969, overthrowing what was left of Bolivian democracy. During the Hugo Banzer regime, Siles fought for human rights and vociferously opposed Luis Garcia Meza's 1980-1981 dictatorship. He died in 2005.
