Luigi Vampa

Luigi Vampa was an Italian smuggler who was active in the 19th-century Mediterranean. In 1828, he met the escaped prisoner Edmond Dantès while preparing to bury alive his crewmember Jacopo Guzman on an island in the Frioul archipelago off Marseille, France. He persuaded Dantès to fight Guzman to the death to determine if Guzman would be put to death or spared, and, after Dantès won, Vampa recruited Dantès into his crew and welcomed Guzman back. Dantès befriended Vampa, and, in 1831, he enlisted Vampa's help with feigning the kidnapping of Albert Mondego in Rome, enabling Dantès to "rescue" Albert and infiltrate his family with the goal of taking revenge on his former friend, Albert's father Fernand Mondego.
