Luigi Cibrario

Luigi Cibrario (23 February 1802 – 1 October 1870) was an Italian statesman and historian who was affiliated with the conservative faction of the Destra Liberale party.

Biography[]

Luigi Cibrario was born in Usseglio, Piedmont, Sardinia-Piedmont on 23 February 1802, and he won a scholarship at the age of sixteen before becoming a teacher two years later. Cibrario entered the civil service and was sent to negotiate Venice's union with Piedmont in 1848, and he became a senator in October of that year. He was associated with the conservative wing of the Destra Liberale party, and he served as Minister of Finance under Massimo d'Azeglio and as Minister of Education under Count Cavour. Cibrario strongly supported Piedmontese intervention in the Crimean War in 1855, and he also supported the creation of a united Italy through diplomacy. He died in 1870.
