Lucius Verus (15 December 130-169) was the Emperor of the Roman Empire from 8 March 161 to 169, succeeding Antoninus Pius and preceding Marcus Aurelius.
Biography[]
Lucius Verus was born on 15 December 130 to Lucius Aelius, a Roman senator. His father was the adopted son and heir of Hadrian, but he predeceased the emperor. As Hadrian lay on his deathbed, he decided to adopt Antoninus Pius as his heir on the condition that Antoninus adopt Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius as his heirs. Lucius Verus and Marcus Aurelius became co-emperors on the death of Antoninus Pius on 8 March 161. From 161 to 166, Lucius Verus won a successful war against the Parthians, and he also fought against the Germanic tribes on the Danube River in the Marcomannic Wars. He died in 169 AD, and Marcus Aurelius became the sole ruler of the Roman Empire.
