Lucius Cornelius Cinna suffect consul

Lucius Cornelius Cinna was a Roman politician and the brother-in-law of Julius Caesar. He was one of Caesar's assassins on 15 March 44 BC, and he was never punished. Cinna was married to Pompey the Great's daughter Pompeia Magna.

Biography[]

Lucius Cornelius Cinna was an initial ally of Julius Caesar and an opponent of Sulla, and he went into exile in Spain before being recalled to Rome by Caesar upon Sulla's downfall. However, he strongly disapproved of Caesar's authoritarian nature, and, on 14 March 44 BC (a day before Caesar's murder), he gave an inflammatory speech attacking Caesar's dictatorial tendencies. On 15 March, at the Roman Senate building, Cinna was the second conspirator to stab Caesar, doing so as the wounded Caesar limped away from Servilius Casca. On the day of Caesar's funeral, a mob killed the poet Helvius Cinna in a case of mistaken identity, believing him to be the conspirator against Caesar. In 32 BC, Cinna served as suffect consul, and he was never punished for his role in Caesar's death.
