Lower Saxony, also known as Niedersachsen, is a German state located in northwestern Germany. Hanover is the state capital, while other major cities in the state include Brunswick, Lueneburg, Osnabrueck, Oldenburg, Hildesheim, Wolfenbuettel, Wolfsburg, and Goettingen. Its major cities are located in its central and southern parts, while the region of East Frisia lies along the North Sea coast. The northeastern region is known as the Lueneburg Heath, a region that was once wealthy from the salt trade. Most of the state's territory belonged to Hanover before German unification, and the coat of arms of Hanover is featured on the state flag. In 2015, Lower Saxony had a population of 7,926,599 people.
