Lower Austria

Lower Austria is the northeasternmost of Austria's nine states, located along the Danube River. While it is located directly to the west of Upper Austria, the region was actually named for its downriver location on the Danube, and the region varied between foothills and a granite plateau. Vienna was, until 1986, the capital of Lower Austria, with Sankt Poelten replacing Vienna; in 2015, the region had a population of 1,653,419 people.
