Lourenco Viegas de Ribadouro (1116-1160) was a 12th-century Portuguese nobleman who served as the chief lieutenant of King Afonso Henriques.
Biography[]
Lourenco Viegas was born in 1116, the son of Egas Moniz o Aio. He was a childhood friend of the future King Afonso Henriques, and he was made Afonso's royal lieutenant in 1127 and accompanied him during his victory over his mother at the Battle of Sao Mamede in 1128. A year later, Viegas was appointed Royal Ensign of Portugal. As King Afonso's adjutant, he again fought at his lord's side at the Battle of Ourique in 1139, commanding the rearguard. Viegas succeeded his father as Lord of Fonte Arcada in 1146, after which he took part in King Afonso's conquest of Santarem from the Moors in 1147. He was slain in battle with the Moors on the border with Evora in 1160.
