Louisville is the largest city in Kentucky (with a metro area population of 1,269,702 in 2014) and the nominal seat of Jefferson County. The city was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and named for King Louis XVI of France, and it sat beside the Falls of the Ohio. The city is home to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Fried Chicken, the University of Louisville, the Louisville Cardinals, and Louisville baseball bats, and it is a "first-class" city. In 2014, the metro area had a population of 1,498,593 people.
