Louisiana is a state in the American South region of the United States. The state consists of 64 parishes, the only state (apart from Hawaii) not to consist of counties; Baton Rouge is the capital, while New Orleans is the largest city. Louisiana was purchased in 1803 in the Louisiana Purchase from France, and it was admitted to the union on 30 April 1812, the 18th state. Louisiana is known for its strong Cajun and Louisiana Creole influences, notably the celebration of Mardi Gras and Cajun cuisine, as well as for its bayous and for its large cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, the latter of which is one of the most diverse and unique cities in America. In 2015, the state had a population of 4,670,724 people, with significant populations of African-Americans, Cajuns, and Native Americans (Louisiana has the largest amount of Native American tribes in any southern state, 18 tribes).
