Louis de Duras, 2nd Earl of Feversham

Louis de Duras, 2nd Earl of Feversham (1641-19 April 1709) was a French-born English nobleman.

Biography[]

Louis de Duras was born in France in 1641, and he came from a family of Huguenot nobles; he was the maternal nephew of the Vicomte de Turenne and was the brothers of Marshals of France Jacques Henri de Durfort de Duras and Guy Aldonce de Durfort de Lorges. In 1663, he came to England in the suite of James, Duke of York and was naturalized that same year. He became an English peer in 1673, and he became Earl of Feversham in 1676. He served as commander of the third and first troops of the Horse Guards while serving on diplomatic missions, and he became Master of the Horse in 1679 and Lord Chamberlain to Queen Catherine of Braganza in 1680. He was appointed a Lord of the Bedchamber in 1682, and he was present at the King's deathbed conversion to Catholicism. He served as a member of the Privy Council undder James II, and he was given chief command against the James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth's rebels, showing cruelty to the vanquished at the Battle of Sedgemoor. He was knighted and given the colonelcy of the first troop of Life Guards, but he made his peace with King William III of England after the Glorious Revolution. He died in 1709.
