Louis V, Duke of Bavaria (May 1315-18 September 1361) was Margrave of Brandenburg from 1323 to 1351 (succeeding Louis IV of Germany and preceding Louis VI of Germany) and Duke of Bavaria from 1347 to 1349 (succeeding Louis IV and preceding Meinhard III of Gorizia-Tyrol).
Biography[]
Louis was the son of Louis IV of Germany and Beatrice of Silesia, and he received the Margraviate of Brandenburg as a fief from his father in 1323. He was unpopular, and he fought against the Duchy of Pomerania from 1328 to 1333, when he gave up his claims to Pomerania. In 1347, he succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria as well, and in 1349 he partitioned Bavaria into Upper Bavaria and Lower Bavaria, ruling Upper Bavaria with Louis VI of Germany and Otto V of Bavaria as Stephen II of Bavaria, William I of Bavaria, and Albert I of Bavaria ruled Lower Bavaria, Holland, and Hainaut. Louis allied with Edward III of England against Karl IV of Germany, and in 1351 he gave Brandenburg to Louis VI and Otto V. He died in 1361, and his son Meinhard III of Gorizia-Tyrol succeeded him.
