Louis I of Etruria (5 July 1773-27 May 1803) was King of Etruria from 21 March 1801 to 27 May 1803, succeeding Ferdinand III of Tuscany and preceding Louis II of Etruria.
Biography[]
Louis was born in Piacenza, Duchy of Parma on 5 July 1773, the son of Duke Ferdinand of Parma and Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria. He was educated at the Spanish court and married his first cousin Infanta Maria Luisa, making him an Infante of Spain. In 1796, while Louis was staying in Spain, the French Republic occupied Parma during the French Revolutionary Wars. Under the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso, Louis was compensated for his loss with the creation of the Kingdom of Etruria, of which he was ruler. He died of an epileptic crisis in 1803 at the age of 29, and his son Louis II of Etruria succeeded him.
