Louis II of Bavaria (13 April 1229-2 February 1294) was Duke of Bavaria from 1253 to 1294, succeeding Otto II of Bavaria and preceding Rudolf I of Bavaria.
Biography[]
Louis was born on 13 April 1229, a son of Otto IV of Bavaria and Agnes of the Palatine; he was the great-grandson of Henry the Lion of Saxony. In 1246, he supported his brother Conrad IV of Germany against Henry Raspe's usurpation, and in 1253 he became Duke of Bavaria. Louis and his brother Henry XIII of Bavaria repelled Ottokar II of Bavaria's 1257 invasion, and he was banned by the pope in 1266 for supporting Conradin and the House of Hohenstaufen. In 1268, he inherited some of Conradin's possessions in Swabia after he was executed by Charles of Anjou, and he supported Rudolf I of Germany's election. On 26 August 1278, he assisted Rudolf at the Battle on the Marchfeld, where Ottokar was killed. Louis died in 1294, and Rudolf I of Bavaria succeeded him. His other son Louis would become Louis IV of Germany in 1313.
