Louis III of France (863-5 August 882) was King of West France from 879 to 882, succeeding Louis the Stammerer and preceding Carloman II of France.
Biography[]
Louis was born in 863, the eldest son of Louis the Stammerer and Ansgarde of Burgundy, and in 879 he became the co-ruler of West Francia with his brother Carloman II of France, who ruled Aquitaine and Burgundy. Louis ruled Neustria (France), and in 880 he captured Macon from Boso of Provence when he renounced his allegiance to West Francia. Louis' Christian French forces defeated the Danish Vikings at the Battle of Saucourt-en-Vimeu on 3 August 881, but he died of a fractured cranium after he hit the steel top of a door while mounting his horse to chase down a girl (with amorous intent).
