Lorraine is a historical region in northeastern France, located along the Moselle, Meuse, and Vosges Rivers. The region, named for the medieval state of Lotharingia, makes up half of France's border with Germany, a country which has heavily influenced the region historically. Lorraine was once under German control under the Holy Roman Empire and the German Empire, and the city of Metz (which has a German name) is considered to be the capital of the region. In 2011, Lorraine had a population of 2,939,393 people.
