Lombardy is a region of northern Italy located on the Alps border with Switzerland. With the city of Milan as the capital, Lombardy is one of the most important regions of Italy, being a center of the Renaissance in the 15th and 16th centuries in addition to being the main battleground of the clashes between the Holy Roman Empire and the Papal States. Lombardy was named for the Lombards, a Germanic tribe that migrated to Italy in the 560s, and it was the home of the Italian Lombard League and the Duchy of Milan. The region is the most populous and richest region of Italy, having a population of 10,001,496 people.
