Ljot Thorfinnsson (932-992) was Jarl of Orkneyar from 991 to 992, succeeding Havard Thorfinnsson and preceding Hlodvir Thorfinnsson.
Biography[]
Ljot Thorfinnsson was born on Orkney in 932, a son of Thorfinn Torf-Einarsson and the brother of Arnfinn Thorfinnsson, Havard Thorfinnsson, and Hlodvir Thorfinnsson. He succeeded his brother Havard as Jarl on his death in 991, and he married the same woman - a daughter of Eric Bloodaxe - who had murdered both of his brothers and betrayed her accomplice in Havard's death. Ljot became an excellent leader, slaying a King of Scotland in the dales of Caithness. However, Ljot himself was killed in battle with the Scots at Skitten Mire, near Wick in Caithness, in 992.
