Lizardo Montero Flores

Lizardo Montero Flores (27 May 1832-2 February 1905) was President of Peru from 6 November 1881 to 27 October 1883, succeeding Francisco Garcia Calderon and preceding Miguel Iglesias.

Biography[]

Lizardo Montero Flores was born in Ayabaca, Peru in 1832, and he joined the Peruvian Navy in 1851. He supported Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco's conservative coup in 1857 and Mariano Ignacio Prado's 1865 nationalist uprising, and he commanded a Peruvian corvette squad during the Chincha Islands War. In 1871, he cofounded the Civilista Party and became a senator and admiral. During the War of the Pacific, he fought against Chile at San Juan and Miraflores. He became Vice President in 1881 and served as President from 1881 to 1883, refusing to cede any territory to Chile and causing him to be exiled after the peace treaty. He returned to Peru in 1890 and returned to being a senator, and he died in 1905.
