Liwaa al-Umma was a Salafi jihadist rebel group that was active from April 2012 to 23 September 2015 during the Syrian Civil War. The group was led by Mahdi al-Harati, an Irish-Libyan man who had just fought in the Libyan Civil War. The group was originally moderate and affiliated with the Free Syrian Army, but Harati left the group after six months, leading to Syrians taking over the group. Liwaa al-Umma joined the Salafist Muhajirin wa-Ansar Alliance in September 2015.
