Livingston is a township in Essex County, New Jersey that was incorporated on 5 February 1813. The township was named for William Livingston, the first governor of New Jersey. Lumber and farming were the major industries of the town after it was founded, and shoemaking and dairy farming became major industries during and after the American Civil War. The population grew quickly after the 1920s, and it experienced many housing developments after World War II due to its status as a suburb of Newark. In 2016, Livingston had a population of 29,801 people, with 46% being Jews in 2002; nearby South Orange and Millburn also had large Jewish populations.
