Little Round Top is the smaller of two rocky hills south of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the companion to the taller hill of Big Round Top. On 2 July 1863, it was the sight of some of the fiercest fighting of the American Civil War during the Battle of Gettysburg, during which William C. Oates' Confederate 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment attempted to seize the hill from Strong Vincent's Union brigade. Confederate snipers and artillery from Devil's Den fired on the hill, inflicting heavy losses; Vincent, Stephen H. Weed, and Patrick O'Rorke were among the dead. The 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment under Joshua Chamberlain counterattacked and drove the Alabamian soldeirs from the hill in a massive bayonet charge, and the tide of the battle was decisively turned in the Union's favor.
