Little Asia in 2016

Little Asia is an ethnic enclave of Chinese and other mainland Asian immigrants in central Kabukicho, Tokyo, Japan. Chinese immigrants played a major role in the redevelopment of Kabukicho after the devastation of World War II, but, by the 1980s, extensive redevelopment projects led to the demolition of many ethnic Chinese neighborhoods in Kabukicho, leaving Little Asia as the last holdout. By 1988, it was a run-down area of small shops and restaurants and cramped alleys, and it was protected by the local triads and by Tachibana Real Estate, both of which allied against the yakuza and ensured that the Tojo-kai could not acquire control of Little Asia's properties. Little Asia was later renovated by the Saio Triad, which oversaw the neighborhood's modernization during the 2010s, but much of Little Asia burned down in a fire in early 2015. By December 2018, the neighborhood was still undergoing repairs.
