Lisson Grove

Lisson Grove is a street and district in Marylebone, London, England. It takes its name from the hamlet and Norman manor of Lileston, which had 40 residents in 1086. The district remained rural until the late 18th century, when the Industrial Revolution transformed Lisson Grove into a slum notorious for drinking, crime, and prostitution. The arrival of the Regent's Canal in 1810 and the railway at Marylebone in 1899 led to the area's rapid urbanization, and, after World War I, Lisson Grove benefited from a housing boom. After World War II, further social housing was built in Lisson Grove, and the Labour Exchange built in Lisson Grove in 1960 became the place where the members of the punk band "The Clash" first met. The area has since acquired an association with art, artists, and theatre.
