Linden is a city in southeastern Union County, New Jersey, located just 13 miles southwest of Manhattan and just along the border with Staten Island. Linden was formed as a township in 1861, named for the German linden (lime) trees imported into the area; it became a city in 1925. In 2015, the city had a population of 42,021, with the largest ancestry groups being Poles (15.2%), Italians (8.8%), Irish (6.8%), German (5.4%), and Portuguese (2.7%). 59.15% of the population is white and 26.88% African-American, with 24.93% of the respondents identifying as Hispanic.
