Lina Hidalgo

Lina Hidalgo (19 February 1991-) was the Democratic County Judge of Harris County, Texas from 1 January 2019, succeeding Ed Emmett.

Biography[]

Lina Hidalgo was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1991, and she was raised in Peru and Mexico before emigrating to Houston, Texas at the age of 15. She went to school in Katy, and she became a US citizen in 2013. Hidalgo became a medical interpreter before entering politics as a Democrat, running for Harris County Judge on a platform focused on flood control, criminal justice, and governmental transparency and accountability. She won by 19,000 votes, becoming the first woman and first Hispanic to be elected Harris County judge. In March 2019, Chambers County commissioner Mark Tice criticized her for giving a bilingual English-Spanish briefing on a chemical fire, telling her that she was not in Mexico.
