Liliana Schiavo (born 1984) was Prime Minister of Italy from 2034 to 2035, interrupting Luigi Galeante's terms. She briefly served as head of government amidst an economic crisis, during which she sought to raise taxes to solve the steep depression. However, she was condemned to repeat the same unpopular austerity policies as her predecessor as party leader, Francesco Crespino, leading to her defeat at the hands of her predecessor Galeante by a considerable margin.
Biography[]
Liliana Schiavo was born in Naples, Campania, Italy in 1984, and she worked as a criminal prosecutor before being elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 2009 as a member of the Democratic Party of Italy. In 2011, M5S covertly bribed her to join them in Parliament, and she was consistently re-elected. In 2034, M5S leader and Prime Minister Francesco Crespino decided that his second term would be his last, as he did not enjoy the support of the Chamber of Deputies for his handling of Italy's severe economic crisis. The party nominated Liliana Schiavo to serve as their new leader, as she was young and untainted by experience as a Prime Minister; around half of M5S' sitting deputies were themselves former Prime Ministers, and were too controversial to be ran in highly competitive elections. In the early 2034 general election, she received 49.5% of the popular vote, and she was narrowly defeated by Italian Left leader Luigi Galeante, who won 50.5% of the vote. However, in late 2034, after Galeante's disastrous tenure as Prime Minister, Schiavo narrowly defeated Galeante for re-election with 50.9% of the vote to Galeante's 49.1%.
Premiership[]
Schiavo sought to oversee the country's transition back to a positive budget, as well as the rejuvenation of the party. While she saved the ambulance service from abolition, she refused to reimplement arts subsidies until the budget was positive again. Schiavo narrowly failed to pass a church tax, which was defeated 14-11, so the government instead abolished agriculture research in a 16-6 vote, rerducing government expenditure. They also voted 22-1 to abolish the food control agency, and the economy reached normal levels by week 8 of 2035. The Chamber then voted 22-0 to approve the reimplementation of retirement homes, but it narrowly failed to pass a luxury tax which was rejected 16-11. The general election saw M5S be reduced to 23.83% and 7 seats, while SI rose to 21.38% and 7 seats, the PD rose to 21.22% and 6 seats, LN rose to 18.92% and 6 seats, and FI rose to 14.65% and 4 seats. The Chamber then voted 18-6 to decline prime ministerial term limits, and, a week later, Schiavo was defeated for re-election by Galeante, who won 55.5% to Schiavo's 44.5%.
