Liberty Island is an island in the Upper New York Bay in the United States. The island was used by Great Britain as a smallpox quarantine station, and the US Army built Fort Wood, a star fort, on the island in 1811. In 1886, when France donated the Statue of Liberty to the USA, President Grover Cleveland had a pedestal built on Liberty Island, and the statue was placed on top of the pedestal. By 1944, the military installation on the island had been completely removed, leaving just the Statue of Liberty. The island is both an exclave of Manhattan, New York City, New York and a part of New Jersey, and it is disputed between the two states.
