The Libertarian Party is a conservative-libertarian political party in the United States that was founded on 11 December 1971. The party agreed with classical liberalism, opposing both the Democratic Party's progressive views and the Republican Party's conservative views, while claiming that it was more culturally liberal than the Democrats and as fiscally conservative as the Republicans. The party wants to lower taxes, abolish the Internal Revenue Service, decrease the national debt, allow people to opt out of Social Security, replace the welfare state with private charities, end the prohibition of illegal drugs, support same-sex marriage, end capital punishment, support gun ownership, and lower the drinking age to 18. The Libertarians became the third-largest party in the United States, and the party had successes in state legislatures and local offices, while it did not manage to enter Congress. In 2016, the party held 147 local elected offices, 2 State Upper House seats, and 2 State Lower House seats.
