The Liberation of Liege (8 September 1944) occurred during World War II when the US First Army, commanded by General Courtney Hodges, captured the Belgian city of Liege from Nazi Germany. The liberation occurred during the swift liberation of Belgium, which had started six days earlier when Allied troops invaded the country. The American capture of Liege was an important capture, as they could cross the Meuse and advanced towards the German border near Aachen.
