The Liberals is a liberal and social liberal political party in Sweden that was founded in 1934 as the Liberal People's Party (also known as the Folkspartiet). The party took part in a coalition government with all non-communist parties in Sweden during World War II, and it ended 44 years of Swedish Social Democratic Party rule in 1976 when it entered a three-party coalition government. The party was strongly committed to a mixed economy and market-based welfare state programs, and it was critical of both left-wing and right-wing parties. The Liberals halted their cooperation with the social democrats during the 1930s due to the Liberals' opposition to nationalizing key industries. By the 2010s, the Liberals were focusing more on gender equality in the school system, while also supporting a free market economy, NATO membership, and European Union involvement.
