The Liberal Party was a liberal political party in Nicaragua. The party advocated complete economic freedom for industrialists and businesses, and it also advocated the natural rights of man, treating all people equally and allowing for people to practice whatever religion they pleased. The party held 56% of the upper house seats in 1844, although the Nationalist Party of Nicaragua controlled the government.
The party existed since Nicaragua's independence was achieved in 1838, but it was defeated in a civil war against the Conservative Party of Nicaragua during the 1850s, during which its alliance with the American filibuster William Walker led to the Filibuster War. It returned to power in 1893 under Jose Santos Zelaya, who lost power in 1909. In 1910, the occupying American forces ousted the Liberals from power, and they remained out of power until 1926, when they forced the Conservatives into a coalition government after a revolt. In 1968, the Liberal Party became the Constitutionalist Liberal Party.
