The Liberal Party of Australia is a liberal-conservative political party in Australia, formed on 31 August 1945 as a successor to the United Australia Party. The party promoted economic liberalism and social conservatism, although former Liberal Party politician John Gorton supported same-sex marriage; the party's ideology was between liberal conservatism and conservative liberalism. The party spent more time in government than any other Australian party, owing to its alliance with the National Party of Australia; the Liberal Party would typically hold the office of Prime Minister, while the National Party would hold the office of Deputy Prime Minister. The Liberal Party rivalled the social democratic Australian Labor Party in elections for decades. In 2020, the Liberal Party had 50,000 to 60,000 members, and it held 60/150 House of Representatives seats and 31/76 Senate seats.
