Biography[]
Liam Cosgrave was born in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland on 13 April 1920, the son of W.T. Cosgrave. He was educated at King's Innss, Dublin, and he served in the army before being elected to the Dail Eireann in 1943 as a Fine Gael member. He was chairman of the committee of the Ministers of the Council of Europe in 1955, and he led the first Irish delegation to the UN General Assembly in 1956. He became leader of Fine Gael in 1965, and he became Taoiseach and leader of the National Coalition Government in 1973. The situation in Northern Ireland occupied much of his administration's attention, and an attempt at compromise in 1973 met with little success. He was defeated in 1977, and Garret FitzGerald succeeded him as party leader that same year. He died in Dublin in 2017 at the age of 97.
