Lewis Dyve (1599-1669) was an English MP and Cavalier general during the English Civil War.
Biography[]
Lewis Dyve was born in Bromham, Bedfordshire, England in 1599, the half-brother of George Digby, 2nd Earl of Bristol. He was knighted in 1620 and served as one of the future King Charles I of England's attendants during his time in Madrid as a prince. He served as MP for Bridport from 1625 to 1626 and for Weymouth in 1628, and he sided with the Cavaliers when the English Civil War broke out in 1642. He served with Prince Rupert of the Rhine at the Relief of Newark in 1644, but he was captured at Sherborne and imprisoned in the Tower of London from 1645 to 1647. He later jumped into the freezing River Thames and escaped, fleeing to Ireland and serving with the Royalist forces there. He died in 1669.
