
Levon Ekmekjian (1958-29 January 1983) was an ASALA member and one of the perpetrators of the Esenboga International Airport attack, alongside Zohrab Sarkissian. He was hanged by Turkey in 1983.
Biography[]
Levon Ekmekjian was born in 1958 to a family of Armenians, and he became a member of the socialist ASALA revolutionary group. In 1982, Ekmekjian and Zohrab Sarkissian trained as members of the "Pierre Gulumian Commando" and were sent to the Esenboga International Airport in Ankara, Turkey, where they carried out the Esenboga International Airport attack on 7 August 1982. They bombed the check-in and gunned down several people, killing 9 people and injuring 72. Ekmekjian was wounded and captured, while Sarkissian was killed. Ekmekjian later repented for his crimes, saying that he was misguided, but he was found guilty of planning to give Turkish territory to another nation and was hanged on 29 January 1983.
