Letard the Thatcher (827-873) was a Mercian captain who served as one of Ealdorman Wigmund of Cambridge's lieutenants during his rebellion against the Danish rulers of Grantebru (Cambridge). In 873, he was captured by Jarlskona Soma while attempting to spy on her forces near Duroliponte, and he was then taken in for interrogation. Under threat of death from Eivor and Soma's lieutenants, Letard revealed that Wigmund had taken refuge at the monastery on the Isle of Ely, but he was then stabbed dead by Soma's lieutenant Galinn as he shouted at the others; Galinn claimed that he had done so to stop Letard from "cursing" the Danes, but - in reality - he had done so to prevent Letard from revealing his complicity in Wigmund's rebellion. Birna pointed out that Christians didn't place curses, raising suspicions about Galinn's loyalty.
