Leroy Van Dyke

Leroy Van Dyke (4 October 1929-) was an American country singer-songwriter. Born in Mora, Missouri and partly raised in Spencer, Wisconsin, he became a famed country musician after releasing his first hit and signature song, "The Auctioneer", in 1956. He recorded more than 500 songs during his 50-year-long career, and his 1961 record of "Walk on By" was the biggest country single of all time as of 1994. Into his later years, he continued a full performance schedule from his ranch near Sedalia, Missouri.

Van Dyke was a conservative, opposing a 1987 bill by Representative Lacy Clay and Senator Spark Matsunaga which intended to force musicians to join the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) union and regard professional musicians as "employees" or their consumers. He also accused the union officials involved of being self-serving, and criticized the Democratic Party for turning the bill into a partisan political issue.
