Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau

Leopold Maximilian Ascania, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau (3 July 1676-7 April 1747), better known as Leopold von Anhalt-Dessau or the Old Dessauer, was the Prince of Anhalt-Dessau from 1693 to 1747 and a Field Marshal of the Prussian Army.

Biography[]

Ascania was born in the city of Dessau in the Principality of Anhalt-Dessau to the House of Ascania, a German noble family. He was the son of Johann Georg II of Anhalt-Dessau, a nobleman loyal to the Kingdom of Prussia, and he became a general in Friedrich I of Prussia's Prussian Army. In 1704 he partook in the Great Polish War, leading the invasion of the Electorate of Saxony and taking Dresden in winter.
