Leonid Markhov was a Senior Lieutenant Commissioner of the Soviet Union, and during World War II he served as the main political officer of the 3rd Shock Army, an infantry army sent to fight against Nazi Germany. Markhov took part in the 1945 offensive into Germany at the close of the Great Patriotic War, and he defeated German forces at the Battle of Seelow Heights on 16 April 1945 after a combined infantry and tank offensive towards the train station. From there, the Soviets headed towards Berlin, with Markhov directing their assault on the Reichstag.
